Surge sells premium human data for frontier model training: RLHF feedback, expert evaluations and red-teaming. There is no public rate card — contracts are quoted per engagement based on task difficulty, expertise and volume. The economics rest on a deliberate choice to pay labelers above-market rates: approved 'Surgers' earn roughly $0.30-0.40 per working minute (about $18-24 per hour of active work), with some tasks paying $16-30 flat, versus cents-per-task crowdsourcing.
That premium labor pool is the moat. Surge's labelers are full-time-trained specialists — software engineers, PhDs, domain experts — which is why frontier labs pay up and why the company cleared $1B of revenue with about 110 people, an implied ~$12.7M of ARR per employee. Anthropic has publicly documented using Surge's RLHF platform, and OpenAI, Google, DeepMind and Microsoft are widely reported clients, though Surge publishes no customer list.
